Ari, the head of education and research at TUAS and in who is in charge of organising our exchange very gererously offered to take each of us Strathclyde students to the ski tube in Turku to teach us how to cross country ski! He took us in three groups and taught us how to do the classic style and then the freestyle techniques at the indoor ski tube which is around 700m long. Classic style is like running on skis and there are specific tracks on the snow for this type, and freestyle is more like ice skating. Iain had never skiied before, Eilidh had been on one ski holiday and Elise had some ski experience but this was in downhill skiing which is very different to cross country, so this was a totally new skill for us. Cross country ski's are skinnier and hence much less stable than downhill ski's so it's safe to say we had our fair share of falls! Despite this we had lots of fun and we hope that we can try out some of our skills when we visit Lapland. Thank you Ari!
